Climate Change Action
CESCI’s objectives of climate mitigation and adaption are stressed through village development, social theatre, networking and training. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals are emphasized in many of CESCI’s programs particularly mitigating the climate crisis. Recognizing that the climate crisis is deeply interconnected with land and livelihood, CESCI took up the issue of nonviolent economy. Because CESCI interacts with rural communities, it places responsibility for ecological sustainablity at the core of its vision. The urgency of climate action calls for both local initiatives and global cooperation. CESCI integrates environmental awareness into its training, community programs, and partnerships, For CESCI, responding to climate change is not just an environmental necessity but also a moral and social imperative in the pursuit of a just and peaceful world.
In the wake of floods, cyclones, and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, CESCI served as a coordination point for grassroots organizations. With its dedicated staff, volunteers, and partners, CESCI organized food and medical relief, and mobilized international support for rebuilding the communities.
Today CESCI has a sub-centre in coastal Tamilnadu (PR Puram) and this focuses on livelihood generation for local people, along with summer programs for children and youth. This is meant to build resilence among the local communities in coastal Tamilnadu.
